Delphix Extends Data Virtualization Reach and Scope

IT organizations can give developers and data scientists copies of data that the IT organization can them determine when and how to update.

Organizations of all sizes are rapidly coming to the realization that they need a more sophisticated approach to how they manage data. Not only is there more data than ever to be managed, but various regulatory agencies around the world are holding organizations more accountable for how that data is employed.

To address that challenge, Delphix today announced the general availability of a Delphix Dynamic Data Platform that makes it simpler to accessed distributed virtual copies of data sets, known as data pods, that can only be accessed by specific individuals regardless of where the data physically resides, including as of today Microsoft Azure Cloud.

Patrick Lightbody, senior vice president of products for Delphix, says that approach to data virtualization reduces the friction that occurs inside most organizations when different groups try to access the same data sets. Rather than having to manage that contention, Lightbody says, IT organizations can give developers and data scientists copies of data that the IT organization can them determine when and how to update. Any changes made to that data can also be easily reverted to its original state, says Lightbody.

“A lot of companies are now in a do or die mode when it comes to digital business transformation,” notes Lightbody. “But in a lot of ways, that only increases the amount of friction between different groups inside the organization.”

The degree to which data virtualization can bring some order to the digital business chaos will vary widely by organization. But at the very least, various groups inside any organization should be able to go to a neutral data corner without having to affect every other group in the organization that needs access to the same data.
